Vertical bone grafting has long been considered the holy grail in periodontal reconstruction and implant dentistry. Prosthetically driven placement of dental implant to restore the edentulous sites requires restoration of alveolar bone in all spatial dimensions – horizontal and vertical. Furthermore, the quality of regenerated bone must also be optimal for longterm success. Different techniques have been used to tackle this problem including Autogenous Block Grafts, Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and Split Bone Block Technique also known as Khoury Technique. No technique is perfect and each caries risks, advantages and disadvantages.
In this lecture we will focus on Vertical (and some horizontal) bone reconstruction. We will look into literature for guidance and to establish realistic expectations. We will go over surgical cases to demonstrate vertical alveolar reconstruction in different areas including the Esthetic Zone.

About Dr. Mohammad Javaid
Dr. Mohammad Javaid or Dr. Mo as his patients like to call him is a Borad Certified Periodontist who works full time in private practice and has taught part time at the Universities of Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. Dr. Mo has cleared the Fellowship of Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) in Periodontics and is a Fellow with the RCDC. Dr. Mo has also passed the excellence exam of the Diplomate of The American Board of Periodontology (DABP) and is a Diplomate with The American Board.
He has published many articles in peer reviewed international journals and has contributed to multiple book chapters in internationally published books in the field of periodontics and implant dentistry. More recently his surgical work has been used by other authors for the demonstration of surgical techniques in their publication in bone reconstruction article and book chapters in Surgical Implant and Periodontal Therapy.
He regularly posts surgical cases on social media. He has posted over 1000 surgical posts on Instagram which can be followed at “perio.ninja”.
